Art Questions

What is the difference between student & artist quality?

Artist quality usually has higher grade & more concentrated ingredients than those classed as student quality. This means that student quality is less durable, you use much more & it's often far more difficult to obtain good results.

I'm a student should I buy student quality?

Student quality is ideal for anyone experimenting or dabbling in painting, but if you want to learn to paint properly you should be using the best ingredients you can afford and leave student quality alone.

Should I varnish my painting?

Yes varnish works like a protective shield on the surface of your painting. It protects it from surface damage by most pollutants such as insect droppings (fly s--t), ozone, cigarette smoke, grease e.t.c. Varnish assists to retain your works vibrant colours as the varnish will suffer most of the UV damage that your paint would have got.

Oil paint doesn't completely dry for several months (can be years with heavy applications) so varnish is not recommended in the first 6 months or so. Acrylic paint can be varnished almost immediately providing you have not used a retarder medium, retarder can re activate even weeks later causing paint to bleed or even run.

What sort of varnish should I use?

We recommend a stripable one, so damaged (yellowed) varnish can be removed without injury to the painting. Damar varnish yellows your work (makes it look aged), some varnishes add gloss (good idea for acrylics) some leave a matt or dull finish, the choice is yours.

Framing Questions

I have this poster, how much to frame it?

Firstly we need to know

1 the size of it,

2 how you value it (limited editions for instance should be conservation reversibly framed),

3 what type of surface finish (clear glass, diffused glass, UV protection glass, varnish E.T.C.)

4 the type of moulding (elaborate or budget)

5 Is it to be matted (a border around the print, which can be several layers thick and be elaborately decorated)

You can spend $20 or $2,000 framing a poster the choices are only limited by our imagination and your budget.

Does the framing work get sent away to be done?

No we do it all here on the premises, Our climate controlled framing room is fitted with a large window so you can even watch if you wish, we are proud of our work and only use quality materials and accepted practices.

Do we do up (restore) paintings and frames?

Yes and no. Firstly we need to evaluate the work and  calculate approximate costings. There are specialists who we can forward works to (art conservators, frame restorers) but some basic jobs can be done in house.

It's often cheaper to replace than to restore but can you put a price on sentiment?

It's wise to have your pieces examined regularly because the materials used in years past to frame your precious heirlooms may be causing damage to it.

If I bring in a some needlework can you lace it and frame it properly?

Yes we are happy to lace your work & use all conservation materials to ensure longevity of your precious piece.
